Coral Farming
Visitors to Oarsman's can snorkel right off the beach and discover one of the most beautiful reefs in Fiji. Stunning coral formations and a plentitude of colourful
tropical fish create a magical experience.
In order to help protect and preserve the reef, the Tui Drola (High Chief) Ratu Epeli placed a 'Tabu' on the lagoon surrounding Oarsman's Bay in June 2006, thus deeming the area sacred. A traditional kava ceremony was held and the area was marked with noku noku trees at either end of the bay. It is now forbidden to touch or remove anything from the water. In effect the Tabu has created a marine park and its benefits include the restocking of fish and the regeneration of the reefs.
In partnership with PCDF (Partners in Community Development Fiji) Oarsman's Bay has commenced coral farming, and the training of staff in reef management.
Small pieces of coral have been trimmed off pieces of "mother coral" and planted on to specially constructed tables. After six months the coral is then transplanted back on to the reef. Fish houses have also been constructed and lowered into the water. These provide habitat for fish and when decorated resemble castles of coral. Snorkellers can view the underwater farm just off the beach and are also encouraged to become involved in planting coral or building fish houses.
